How shared micromobility is shaping urban travel

Shared micromobility is now a key part of how people move in cities. Dott’s annual Rider Survey, conducted this fall across 37 cities and with 8615 respondents, provides fresh insights into who uses micromobility, why, and what cities can do to make it safer, more reliable, and more inclusive.

Commuting made easier

For most riders, shared micromobility is primarily about getting to work or school. 65% of trips are commutes, and nearly half of all rides connect with public transport, showing that micromobility is not a replacement for buses or trains, but a complement. It fills the gaps in public transit networks, making it easier for people to navigate cities efficiently.

Accessibility drives adoption

The survey shows that convenience and accessibility are at the heart of sustainable travel choices. Riders turn to Dott because it helps them save time (75%) and reach destinations where and when public transport isn’t available (52%). By filling these everyday gaps, Dott makes sustainable mobility the most practical option, especially in areas that are less connected, helping more people move efficiently without relying on cars.

Women & micromobility

Women currently make up 22% of riders, and participation varies across cities – with highest shares in Lyon (33%), Paris and Rome (25% respectively). The gender gap highlights the need for safe and inclusive infrastructure, from well-lit routes to secure parking. As 32% of women riders already use Dott to get home safely at night, micromobility can only reach its full potential if everyone feels safe and confident to ride.

City support matters

54% call for better road infrastructure, and 61% want more parking spots close to destinations. Proximity matters, as most riders prefer to walk no more than five minutes to find a vehicle. Beyond city centres, 42% of riders also want Dott to be available in surrounding areas, underlining the value of regional micromobility networks over fragmented city-by-city systems. Together with local authorities, Dott is helping make these connected, accessible transport ecosystems a reality.
